My Teaching Philosophy: The Impact of Art
The art room is a place where creativity is bursting and students are soaking all the wonders that it brings. I create this kind of learning environment where students are creating and discovering the arts. Where students can learn more about themselves and their capabilities. When students leave my classroom at the end of the year they do not only gain technical skills in art making, but also they are enlightened. Students understand how to problem solve and work through the obstacles of art making, but also they are able to walk away with a sense of pride and respect for the arts. The most important part of my teaching is to instill confidence and to educate students on the impact art has not only on them, but on the world.
Students understand that to be an artist it is not solely based on skill level. This type of misconception about art and artist is included in the class discussions on art history. As important as it is for students to learn the history of art they also learn about the art community of today. I bring current well known artist who make a living off of their work and show case their work in galleries around the world. There is this huge art community of different kinds of artist and art out there that students need to be exposed to. This kind of teaching will mean that I will always be involving myself in the art community and educating myself on the new trends of art. As I continue in the profession, I will continue to educate not only students, but colleagues, friends, and family on the importance of art and how art impacts us everyday.
Art has impacted my life in many ways, but it is the Art Educators that have impacted my choices in life. Before I received my Bachelors in Illustration from Northern Illinois University, I was previously enrolled in Art Education and then my professor swayed me to go into Illustration. Though, my illustration career was short lived, it is still something that I love and continue to pursue. Yet, Art Education has always been on mind. As a student myself, I have come to realize that the person that I am today wouldn’t be possible without my art teachers. The dedication and hard work that I have put into my art over the years has made me into the person I am today. The lessons and advice that I will give to my students is something that starts in the classroom and goes beyond the classroom. Not only do I invest time in teaching art making, but also I invest time in my students. I allow time during class and after class for my students to feel comfortable talking to me. As an Art Educator, I will give my free time to the students and listen to them when they need someone to talk to.
